You don’t know what you don’t know, right? That’s parenting in a nutshell, especially with teens. It’s like you enter a whole new world.
Behind Closed Doors: A Guide to Help Parents and Teens Through Life’s Toughest Issues by Jessica L. Peck was written to help parents “meet teens where they are”.
Jessica is an author and a mom and holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree nurse practitioner. This gives even more depth to this book, as she lays out several aspects to consider, and divides each chapter into three sections: Behind the Clinic Door, Behind the Home Door, and Behind the Heart Door.
Help for Parents and Teens
The book does a great job moving between story and practical tips and advice. The activities throughout prompt intentionality on our part as parents to deepen conversations and deepen relationships with our teens. And as most important to me, I love the use of Biblical truth, relevant bible verses, and prayers. Along with that, there are movie and worship song recommendations that further deepen the impact the topics discussed in each section.
Now, regarding topics, it also tackles topics that may otherwise be hard to discuss or even left unspoken: Such as social justice, suicide, vaping, substance abuse, sex, pornography, and eating disorders to name a few. All important topics The book makes it less challenging to discuss by suggesting ways to bring up the topic with your teen and notes keys for the conversation.
The book is really broken down in a way where you can’t go wrong. So, I really recommend this book to any parent who wants to understand and help their teen in all aspects of life, including mentally, physically, and spiritually.
