Homeschool Curriculum
Homeschool Curriculum. If you’ve followed along for a while, you know that this school year (2015-16) is the 1st year that I’ve done homeschool with our kids. We made the decision after some thought and ultimately being led by God to homeschool. You can read more about Our Choice to Homeschool. The decision to get started; was made right before the start of the school year and it had me in a frenzy on what curriculum to use.
I didn’t know much about homeschool but I did know that I wanted absolute reign/control over the curricula that I would be teaching. So, No Box Curriculum here, meaning those that come packaged with every subject included. Although, this is a great option for 1st timers…I believe it cuts down on the stress of putting your own curriculum together.
What I did end up doing is using the State of NC Homeschool Handbook/Guide for the subjects each grade should be learning. Then I researched which curriculums were good for those subjects and ones that met the Mission/Vision for our Homeschool.
While researching, I came across Homeschool Styles and really haven’t adopted any of them solely. My style is eclectic, somewhat a collection of different styles.
In the end, I chose the following curriculum:
Bible – LightUnit Elective by Christian Light Education
History – TruthQuest History
Math – Saxon Math
Reading – All About Reading
Social Studies – Homelands Around the World by Milestone Books
Language Arts – Simply Charlotte Mason (Using Language Well, Spelling Wisdom, Print to Cursive Proverbs)
Science – Apologia: The #1 Publisher of Creation Based Science and Biblical Worldview Curriculum
I’ll be doing a review on each of these as I’ve much to say.
In addition to the core subjects we have been doing Bible (actually listed above), Art (Art with a Purpose), Music (Music Theory I), Spanish (Teach Them Spanish) and Typing Instructor for Kids (Typing CD-Rom). Whew, yep it’s a lot. I’ve learned so much this year and continuing to learn and I will surely be making adjustments for next school year.
Have you used any curricula listed above? What has been your experience?
