Meet our baby boy!! We are now potty training him at 2 year old (26 months to be exact). It’s been a while since my hubby and I have potty trained a child and my first time potty training a boy. So, I went to one of my reliable resource, the Baby Center. I used Baby Center as an online resource since I was expecting my daughter, over 7 years ago. It has a wealth of information and great resources for parents. We started the process now because we felt that he would be more successful as he is exhibiting a majority of the signs that he is ready, as noted by the Baby Center Potty Training Readiness Checklist:
Physical signs
-Is coordinated enough to walk, and even run, steadily.
-Urinates a fair amount at one time.
-Has regular, well-formed bowel movements at relatively predictable times.
-Has “dry” periods of at least two hours or during naps, which shows that his bladder muscles are developed enough to hold urine.
Behavioral signs
-Can sit down quietly in one position for two to five minutes.
-Dislikes the feeling of wearing a wet or dirty diaper.
-Gives a physical or verbal sign when he’s having a bowel movement such as grunting, squatting, or telling you.
-Demonstrates a desire for independence.
-Takes pride in his accomplishments.
-Isn’t resistant to learning to use the toilet.
-Is in a generally cooperative stage, not a negative or contrary one.
Cognitive signs
-Understands the physical signals that mean he has to go and can tell you before it happens or even hold it until he has time to get to the potty.
-Can follow simple instructions, such as “go get the toy.”
-Understands the value of putting things where they belong.
-Has words for urine and stool.
A few things that we started before he turned 2 years old was reading a picture book about going to the potty, sitting him on the potty at different frequencies and asking if he has to potty and to let us know when he has to potty. Well, he does let us know when he has pottied…just got to work on letting us know ahead of time!
I had several parents say that they used the cold turkey method of putting their boy on undies and that by allowing their child to feel the discomfort, if and when, an accident happened; it assisted in a shorter process. I could see how this could work but as the parents mentioned; it could be messy for your floors! So I don’t we will be trying that idea.
We bought our 1st pack of pullups for him and used them while we were vacationing. My hubby and I originally had a goal of having baby boy potty trained by the end of vacation but that didn’t happen. He did go pee pee in the potty a few times…I call that PROGRESS! So as for now, I think we will use our son’s typical schedule and take him to the potty at those times just to get him accustomed to going more. It’s a hard process and I think it’s more difficult for parents that work outside the home but we’ll get through it!
I do know that every child is different. However, I would definitely appreciate any helpful tips for potty training boys and I’m curious as to the duration of their potty training success!
