Sometimes God intentionally leads us on the longer path

Sometimes God intentionally leads us on the longer path.

This is the thought I had when I read passages in Exodus a few weeks ago, as part of our family devotional time. And it still resonates with me today.

I’d read and heard these passages before but it was a needed reminder for me and maybe it will be the same for you.

The passage reads, “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter.

For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” So, God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.

The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle” (Exodus 13:17-18 NIV).

For me, these verses, point to a notion, that if we are given the shorter route or if we face a certain war or struggle, we may return to Egypt. The thought, we may return to our old ways, our old mindset, or maybe even not go after God’s best.

God knows all and sees all.

He knows us full well. He knows our thoughts and our intentions. And because he knows all, He knows how best to prepare us. For the place and things he has prepared for us.

Maybe like me, some moments in life, you’ve wondered why things have happened the way they’ve happened. And maybe like me, you’ve had conversations with God, like “really God”.

But then moments, months, and maybe years go by. And you see why things didn’t go the way you thought they would, or it just took a little longer than expected.

Because sometimes God intentionally leads us on the longer path.

No, I don’t have all the answers to my why questions. But when it comes to my very own specific ordered steps, I’ve seen why the path was long.

And maybe you’re feeling your journey is long, or longer than it should be. Maybe the path to reach your goal feels long. Maybe the answer to your prayer seems long. Or maybe the victory you have been waiting for just feels out of reach at this point.

I encourage you to hold on. I encourage you as you walk the long road to glean all you can along the way. Asking God, what are you teaching me in this wait? What can I learn along the long path? How can I know you more?

Then trust the Maker of all things, who know all things, with your life path. Knowing He has your best interest in mind. And that though the path is long, He is with you every step of the way. God is leading and guiding you in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

You will be surprised at the end, how truly prepared you are for the place you arrive.
