Ovarian cancer is a growth of abnormal malignant cells that begins in the ovaries (women’s reproductive glands that produce ova). Cancer that spreads to the ovaries but originates at another site is not considered ovarian cancer.

Ovarian tumors can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Although abnormal, cells of benign tumors do not metastasize (spread to other parts of the body).  Malignant cancer cells in the ovaries can metastasize in two ways:  directly to other organs in the pelvis and abdomen (the more common way), through the bloodstream or lymph nodes to other parts of the body.

Ovarian Cancer is known as the silent killer among women, as some of the symptoms resemble those of a woman’s monthly cycle.

Symptoms include:
Bloating
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)

Women who have these symptoms almost daily for more than a few weeks should see their doctor, preferably a gynecologist. Prompt medical evaluation may lead to detection at the earliest possible stage of the disease. Early stage diagnosis is associated with an improved prognosis.

So, don’t forget to show your support by wearing Teal today or anytime this month and Break the Silence of Ovarian Cancer!!!

  1. Thank you so much for this post. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer 3 years ago. She was blessed that the drs found it & were able to treat it before it progressed. She is now going on 2 years cancer free. The key to beating this is definitely awareness. And if cancer runs in your family especially ovarian, breast, prostate or skin cancer please look into having the brca gene test done. Early monitoring & detection is key to fighting back against this terrible disease. Again, thank you so much for posting this. No one fights alone!!

How Awesome Jennifer! Thank you so much for sharing. Your Mom & family are so blessed! And yes, I’ve learned through promoting awareness just how few women know about it and it’s symptoms. We hear a lot about breast and prostate cancer but not much about ovarian. My sorority is actually a proud supporter of Ovarian Cancer Research and promotors of awareness and that’s how I got involved over 5 years ago!

We had a manicurist at my workplace today. She did teal nails and toes for everyone. Thanks for bringing this to the forefront.
