Pitch to the Media

img_5135Have you ever seen a blogger featured on your local new station or your local paper and wonder how it happened? Well there several ways that it could’ve happened. One could be that they pitched the idea to the media.

Well, I attended my 1st Blogger Meet Up a few weeks ago. The event was hosted by one of our local News Stations ABC11 and an area Blogger group. I received the invite since I am actually apart of the ABC 11 Science Club Blogger Buzz. I was super excited to meet other area bloggers and to learn a bit about pitching to the Media. So today, I’m sharing what I learned on how to pitch to the media with you!

Pitch to the Media

The panel included members of the ABC11 news team and social media team like John, the Director of Digital Strategy and Operations and Taylor, Social Media Manager also one of their News Anchors Anna, another Manager, and the Founder of the area Blogger Group TriFABB.

How to Pitch to the Media – Blogger Tips

img_5136So, how Do You Pitch to the Media. You may have seen it in the title image. All you need is 3 things:

  1. Be Short – media staff like other brands have tons of e-mails and calls to sift through each day. So keeping your pitch short and precise is key. The subject line of an e-mail is also key. Try to sum up your pitch in 3 words. Although, this would not be your complete pitch, you should be able to sum it up into 3 words.
  2. Add Value – ask yourself, “Why do I care?”, your pitch should answer this question. Why would someone care about your story. Be sure to include visual elements and even video where appropriate.  Has your story already created local buzz? Or will it create local buzz? Great stories tend to include ‘Good Deeds and Community Needs’!
  3. Big Picture – Make sure that ll the pieces are pre-packaged: Your story, any photos or videos to support your story, as well as people, etc.

Sounds simple but have you ever pitched to media? I plan to pitch a few ideas in the upcoming months.

Let me know if these tips help!
