How to Trust God

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart. And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Proverbs 3:5

This is such a familiar verse. But today I want to discuss it in the context of trusting God when it looks like he has failed you. I know that we can all think of an instance where we have prayed and prayed and believed God for something and it did not come to pass. Whether it was for the healing of a loved one, a promotion on the job, the promise of a spouse, the salvation of a friend or family member, etc. We can all give our own examples of when it seemed like our prayers were not answered and it just looked and felt like God failed us.

[tweetthis]God has not failed to answer our prayers. We are just too quick to rely on our own understanding.[/tweetthis]

One reason is that we are so quick to rely on our own understanding. We must remember that God’s ways are not our ways nor his thoughts like our thoughts. Right now my heart aches over the loss of my Dad but blaming God isn’t the answer. God did not fail me. It is just not his character…he can not fail! So what happens when it seems that our prayers aren’t answered. I truly believe it is not for us to know at this present time but I believe that over time, and at the appropriate time, God will reveal it to us or give us some divine insight. I have experienced this before with the loss of two of my sisters. So here’s…

How to Trust God When It Looks Like He Has Failed You:

  1. Affirm God’s Character through the Word of God. God is love (I John 1:8). Love Never Fails (I Corinthians 13:8). God loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3).
  2. Meditate on the Word of God. God’s Word does not return void, but it accomplishes that which it set out to do (Isaiah 55:11). Nothing happens without the Lord allowing it. “Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has authorized and commanded it?” (Lamentations 3:37). Be Still and Know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).
  3. Pray Over Anxious Thoughts. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”. (Philippians 4:6), “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
