“Great bodies are earned and not granted”! I’m unsure of the author of this quote but it is so true, it takes hard work!

I’ve stayed pretty consistent with my workout routine during March, staying on target with the Thin in 30 routine by The Firm (see my Wellness Wednesday #2 post) and averaging 3 miles per week with running. My weight dipped last week to 169.8, a 3.2lb loss from last month! I was so excited to have finally broken the 170’s plateau!!! Today, I’m back at 172.8lb…really!?! Have you ever gained 3-5lbs like overnight seemingly and knew that it was not possible? Well the good news it that it’s not!!

I came across this Q&A from CNN with regards to weight fluctuation that I think you will find as interesting as I did! Here are a few excerpts that definitely apply to me.

“Weight fluctuations are mostly due to water weight.”

“Basic laws of physics would not allow you to gain four pounds of fat in such a short period unless you ate an extra 14,000 calories (each pound of fat contains 3,500 calories). Mild dehydration may cause fluid retention, which can increase scale weight, which may be one of the reasons your weight dropped with increased water intake.”

“Another reason may be due to the fact that training muscles, especially if you are new to weight lifting, causes micro tears in the muscle, which is how muscle is built. This can lead to fluid retention in the muscle itself for a couple of days.”

This was definitely a good read!! As I’ve mentioned before, don’t sweat the numbers! If you want to get a better idea of your progress, take your body measurements versus weighing.

  1. This happened to me, too! Between Friday and Monday I “gained” 5 pounds. WHAT?! Logically I know that’s not possible, but it’s good to have it reiterated.

I know, right! Not logical but for some reason when we see the numbers we immediately try to ponder what it could be. That’s one reason why we need each other to help keep our mind on track.

      Thanks for stopping by Gwen!
