5 Tips for Pregnancy/Postpartum Fitness and Wellness

Fitness and Wellness are important at every stage of life but particularly during pregnancy and afterward. Here are 5 tips to help during this time.

  1. Hydrate. I can’t stress this enough. Hydrating with water is important for any human being but especially for the expectant and nursing mom. Dehydration during pregnancy can cause complications during pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I experienced pre-term labor with dehydration being one of the major factors. Dehydration postpartum while nursing could stunt milk production afterward.
  2. Keep it Moving. Stay active as long as you possibly can throughout your pregnancy and then when you are given the thumbs up to start back again afterwards, get to it. Walking is a great exercise that you can do late in pregnancy and as a starter after pregnancy.
  3. Pop a Vitamin. Along with eating well, keep up on your vitamins. For sure your baby is getting what they need from you which can make your body deficient in what it needs. Vitamins help with this during pregnancy and afterwards especially if nursing. I became low on iron during pregnancy this last time around, so needed to add in an iron supplement.
  4. Get Some Rest. I know you’ve heard this a time or two but get as much rest as you can. During pregnancy, take naps when you are able…sometimes sleeping at night can be tough with all the bathroom breaks and just feeling uncomfortable. Here are some tips to get to more sleep.
  5. Know Your Limits. If your body is telling you that it “ain’t feeling it” regarding working out at any point during your pregnancy…take a listen and sit it out. You know your body better than anyone, so if you feel that you should take a break from working out, do so. And after baby, if you feel that you need more time to recover, take the time to do so. With my oldest, I had to stop working out at 6 months due to pre-term labor but I was able to workout throughout my entire pregnancy this last go round, so it all depends. Listen to your body and know your limits.
