Natural Hair Curls Using Perm Rods

Natural Hair Curls Using Perm Rods. I have not posted about my natural hair in what seems like FOREVER…It’s getting so long and I feel like I’m not even qualified to care for it lol. This is the longest that my hair has ever been (mid-way back length) and to be honest it is quite taunting and I’m finding myself headed to YouTube to try to get ideas on “what to do” with “all this hair”.  It was a cinch to do my hair when it was short, manageable when it was shoulder length but now that its longer I just don’t know…it’s a different experience!

Natural Hair Curls Using Perm RodsFinger Detangling has always been key as part of my wash routine but even more so now. I don’t want to lose unnecessary hair just because I don’t want to take the time to detangle it properly. I will also use a detangle brush after finger detangling.

So for this style, I washed my hair with Tresemme Shampoo and  generally use the Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner along with it but only used Cantu leave-in conditioner this time. Using a blow dryer on medium heat, I blowed out my hair and then flat ironed it using a light heat protectant. I don’t flat iron my hair that often, maybe once per quarter if that. Since, I’m usually wearing a sew-in. I have used a curl wand to create curls before and I really liked how that turned out but again my hair wasn’t this long.

With this length and my off time from a sew-in, I took to YouTube for some inspiration. For this style, I only used a little bit of Design Essentials NATURAL Curl Enhancing Mousse and virgin coconut oil.

This tutorial was perfect since I was looking for something that didn’t require much work. With this style, I ended up using only six (6) orange (medium size) perm rods for this look, YES only 6. It turned out pretty good and it kept for a week, by putting it up in a pineapple at night.

  1. I like the blonde tips on your hair! How long does this curling process take and how long does it last for you?

Thanks so much! I let the rods stay in over night and remove the rods the next day. These curls lasted for about a week.

  2. Your hair is dynamite! Thanks for sharing this tutorial 🙂

  3. I love the curls with the blonde and dark hair. It looks beautiful. My hair is so dry and frizzy if I don’t style it. This is a great way to do that without the heat of a curling iron.

  4. I really love your hair especially those highlights! Such a gorgeous hair idea!

  5. Wow! Can’t believe you got your curl look in just 6 perm rods! I’ll check this out!
